Facilities

The University has three different areas of activities viz. teaching, research and extension.

Academic

Academic programmes are carried out in Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya under three faculties, viz.

  1. FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE
  2. FACULTY OF HORTICULTURE
  3. FACULTY OF TECHNOLOGY

Under Graduate, Post Graduate and Ph.D. Programmes are carried out under Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Horticulture. Faculty of Technology offers U.G. Programme only. The Deans act as the functional Heads of the Faculties. Each Faculty has a Faculty Council which deals with all matters related to academic programmes at Faculty level. There is an apex body, Academic Council which is the Academic Authority of the Viswavidyalaya.

    Research Facility:

    The research activities of the University are administered by the Research Council where the Director of Research is the functional head. The Research Council of the University is the highest authority to supervise, direct and control all the research activities and the policy making body on research in the University.

    Regional Research Stations:

    The University has three Regional Research Stations (RRS) based on agro-climatic and socio-economic characteristics of the regions one each for Hill Zone at Kalimpong, Terai Zone at Pundibari, Cooch Behar and Old Alluvial Zone at Majhian, Dakshin Dinajpur. Each of the RRS has one or more Regional Research Sub-Stations (RRSS). Besides the traditional field crops, tea, tobacco, medicinal and aromatic plants and orchids are the predominant cash crops in this region. Research work on fundamental and applied aspects on agricultural problems with special reference to agro-biotechnology are carried out at different centres of the University. Besides, a number of ICAR-sponsored All India Co-ordinated Research Projects, more than 50 externally-funded research projects are operative at the RRSs and RRSSs supported from Govt of West Bengal, Govt of India (ICAR, DST, DBT, CSIR, Tea Board, NMPB, Ministry of Food Processing & Industries, Ministry of Water Resources, Dept Earth Science, etc.) and International organizations (ACIAR, CIMMYT, ICARDA, etc.). Research efforts have already witnessed release of varieties for several field and horticultural crops, other crop management technologies at the state and National levels. The University undertakes such agricultural extension activities as are necessary to uplift the condition of rural livelihood through transfer of technologies (ToT) generated from researches either from its own research system or from the network of five Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) at Kalimpong, Coochbehar, Chopra, Ratua amd Majhian or in collaboration with different Govt. and non-Govt. Agencies. Their activities have been recognized through several awards (ICAR Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Rashtriya Krishi Vigyan Protsahan Puraskar, 2016-17 to the Krishi Vigyan Kendra Uttar Dinajpur; Mahindra Samriddhi Award 2017-18 for two farmers under KVK Uttar Dinajpur; IARI Innovative Farmer Award, 2018 to a Farmer nominated by UBKV from Siliguri).

LIBRARY FACILITY:

The University has a Central Library at the main campus at Pundibari. There are also unit libraries at other academic establishments and Regional Research Stations of the University. E-Journal Consortia, CABI Abstract with full text article, on-line journals, reference books, textbooks with sufficient numbers, Indian journals, CD ROM Database and soft copy of books are available at central and unit libraries. There are around 34000 (Thirty four thousand) numbers of books available in the library. On an average 85 print journals (including some foreign journals) are subscribed and more than two thousand e-journals are freely accessed through CeRA (Consortiurn for e- Resources in Agriculture). Other e-contents are also available on the following URLs. These are www.asabglobe.com (e-books); www.wileyonlinelibrary.com (wiley journal); www.indiaagristat.com (statistical data); www.bestbookbuddies.com (e-book); www.krishikosh.egrantha.ac.in (thesis); www.sciencedirect.com (science journal); www.jgateplus.com (CeRA). E-library facilities and library operation is done by the library software. Photocopy service is provided for the members of the library. A well-furnished Computer Laboratory is arranged for browsing and net surfing for the students. 1GB Broad Band connectivity through the NKN is established through LAN (all over the campus). 24 hour Wi-Fi connection is available in our library as well as campus area.

Placement Cell

Campus counselling cum placement cell is in operation since 2006-07 with an adhoc committee in the University. The campus counselling cum placement cell is led by a Placement Officer.

COMPUTER

Computer with internet facilities are available in each department. Various course in Computer application and Science are offered under the Department of Agricultural Statistics and Faculty of Technology. Besides these there is a Students Computer Center for use by the students of all Faculties.

WORKSHOP FACILITY

University has a well-developed workshop facility under Faculty of Technology for the course of B. Tech in Agricultural Engineering. This workshop has all the instruments/equipment related to Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering.

 LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION SKILL DEVELOPMENT FACILITY

A well-developed Laboratory for enhancement of communication skill and personality of student has been developed by STEP, IIT, Kharagpur.

Farm Facilities

Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya has a fairly well-developed Agricultural Experimental Farm of about 300 acres at Pundibari, Cooch Behar, West Bengal. The farm is treated as laboratory to the scientists and students. The University farms, apart from regular teaching, research and extension activities, its vast remaining areas in 11 units distributed over North Bengal is utilized purposefully for farmers service through production of quality seeds and arranging farmers’ training under the supervision of scientists and technologists with the objective to take part in the process of transformation in agriculture in the area.
